Recently I was reading technology magazine WIRED. I saw a very interesting article on how the company Apple has survived thanks to Steve Jobs. The article is written by Leander Kahney and titled “How Apple got everything right by doing everything wrong”.
Apple
Silicon Valley, this piece of land is where dreams become reality. Silicon Valley is where every generation of computers are designed for other countries to produce. The main companies situated in this valley are HP (Hewlett & Packard), Dell, and the growing Apple.
Apple has been taken over by the man who innovated computers, Steve Jobs. He is known for being a hardass. He is known for doing whatever he wants and having it done whenever he wants. For example, often Apple´s parking lot gets full and when Job is arriving he sure doesn’t want to have to walk a lot therefore the handicap´s parking provides him with a special place. Apple´s workers have now put a Mercedes logo. He doesn’t respect any rules, including the “Silicon Valley Democracy”. “¨Steve proves that it´s OK to be an asshole, ¨ says Guy Kawasaki, Apple´s former chief evangelist.”
Many employees agree that nothing can get past Job´s “security”. He scrutinizes everything down from screws in a computer to pixels on a screen. Job has proved to the world that sometimes, juuuuust sometimes, it is good to make people fear you, respect you, and know that no matter how good they are you won´t hesitate to fire them.
Job is known for his intense work and pressure. Nobody wants to get in an argument with him. This fear has gotten through and made Apple a very successful company. When Job took over this company in 1997 it was worse than a shipwreck, it was fighting for survival. Right now it is above DELL and catching up with Intel, it owns a marketing cap of 105 billion dollars. This has made many people fear his ability and his ability to survive with what he knows what to do, get money in large quantities.
The Ipod takes up 70% percent of the MP3 market, beating Microsoft´s Zune by a lot. Every Ipod is worth about 200$ with one another (Supposing that the Video and the Nano balance each other out), this would be a simple equation. There has been 100 million Ipods sold Until April 9th 2007, so it´d be a very easy 100,000,000 x 200$ = 200,000,000,000 dollars only on Ipods. This isn’t the only business that Ipods bring, you can add up the four billion songs ITunes has sold at 99 cents.
Jobs also has a very true thought, create everything that is unique, don’t let anyone else use your item in another application; if they want to use It let them waste some money, such us iPod movies on your TV, you´ll have to buy a special Apple connector. If the public accepts this well then why change it and make it as public as Microsoft and Dell has done it. Apple doesn’t have to announce anything so that other companies can make PC´s or laptops that fit with the specifications therefore everyone knowing before time what they are up to and they would have some time to start creating a competence for something like that. Instead Apple produces everything from programs, to key tabs and so everything that Apple releases is kept in secret until it goes into the market officially. “Software and hardware designers are housed in separate buildings and are kept from seeing each other´s work, so neither gets a complete sense of the project. ´We have cells, like a terrorist organization, ´ Jon Rubestein.”
Basically this article is giving us information about how Apple went from being a graveyard to a very successful company by innovating the world and maintaining everything in secret until release day. It shows us that Steve Jobs is a very successful person and he does have a very unusual method of bossing people around, which is fear; feared to be humiliated by one of the most important people in Silicon Valley, fearing to be fired because of a mistake.
Here´s a question for you, does Steve Jobs method work because he is evil or a genius?
